Frequently Asked Questions

  • Abortion funds exist to provide financial and logistical support to people who are seeking abortion care. Some of them work with clinics to help pay for your abortion. Some of them offer support such as transportation, childcare, translation, doula services, and somewhere to stay if you have to travel to get your abortion. Abortion funds often work with each other if they can’t fully assist a caller, or if a caller is traveling across regions. Over 100 abortion funds exist in the United States.

  • The cost of your abortion depends on what type of abortion you have and where you receive your care. Telehealth, medication abortion will cost about $200. An in-clinic, suction abortion during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy averages $800. Abortions after 16 weeks can cost several thousands of dollars.

  • Prairie Abortion Fund, formerly the North Dakota Women in Need Abortion Access Fund, decided to rebrand for a couple of reasons. First, we know that people of all genders have abortions. Language has significant power and removing the word "women" from our name was a values-aligned decision. Transgender, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming people have and always will be supported by the Fund.

Secondly, the ND WIN Fund was founded in 1999 to aid South Dakota and North Dakota residents who were blocked from using their Medicaid insurance to pay for abortion care because of the Hyde Amendment. We are now living in a post-Dobbs reality and the need for community-based care and support has never been more imperative. We desired a caller-centered name and updated visual identity to go along with the exponential increase in reach and demand of our Fund. Our callers live in or travel to the Upper Midwest (the prairie states) for their abortion care.

  • Donate, attend an event, host your own fundraiser, share our posts on social media, join the PAF Book Club, and apply to be a board member.

Learn more about how to Support PAF.

  • We never ask a caller to prove they need support. We only gather essential information and make sure people feel respected and valued. If your abortion is scheduled at Red River Women’s Clinic, ask about Prairie Abortion Fund assistance. For appointments taking place at a different clinic, send us an email at info@prairieabortionfund.org to initiate support.

  • SisterSong defines Reproductive Justice as the human right to maintain personal bodily autonomy, have children, not have children, and parent the children we have in safe and sustainable communities.

  • Our logo is the silhouette of a yarrow (Achillea millefolium). The yarrow shrugs off cold winters, hot and humid summers, and poor soil conditions to bloom bright, yellow flowers. The yarrow has traditionally been used as an abortifacient, emmenagogue, contraceptive, and for stimulating uterine contractions.

We know that people have used plants and herbs to manage their abortions for thousands of years and wanted to pay homage to a plant indigenous to our region that has made abortions possible.

Prairie Abortion Fund is dedicated to making your abortion more accessible. You have the right to make decisions about your body.
